Nenagh, Co. Tipperary Research
N.B.The following are excerpts from Terry Fogarty's research booklet on his family
history; as a desendant of Michael Fogarty of Australia, he has graciously agreed to share
his research with us.
"travelling from Nenagh to Limerick the Burgess Cemetery is located on the right hand side of the highway
some distance off the road. To reach the cemetery turn right off the highway about 4 miles after leaving Nenagh
and follow a narrow road running parallel to the highway. After leaving the cemetery the same narrow road brings
one back to the highway just before a hotel - perhaps called the Yellow Hotel."
In October 1995 I visited Ireland with my wife, Mary (nee Murphy) and our daughters Jacqueline, Danielle and
Caitlin. We stayed at Curraghbawn House, Newtown, just outside Nenagh. This homestay was run Mrs. Mary
O'Callaghan nee Nealon, whose grandmother mother was a Fogarty. Mary was very helpful. She had a copy of
the 1845 General Valuation of Ireland - Primary Valuation & Tenements. Under the section: County Tipperary,
North Riding, Barony of Owney & Arra, Union of Nenagh, Parish of Burgessburg; we found the following entries
pertaining to Fogartys who may have been related to Michael:
p.6 Matthew Fogarty - Ballywhisky (Finch)
p.9 William Fogarty - Carrigatogher (Hardy)
James Fogarty
Joseph Fogarty - Carrigatogher (Ryan)
Daniel Fogarty
Matthew Fogarty - Kilcolman
I think these were the only Fogartys listed in the area and I guess there is a good chance these may have been
Michael's brothers or sons. The Carigatogher listing owned by Ryan is also naturally of interest (Michael married
Judith Ryan in Ireland - although Ryan is a very common name in northern Tipperary. I would hazard the guess
that James & Michael Fogarty hailed from Garigatogher.
Garigatogher is the area around Ballywilliam (Burgess) Church. The Catholic Parish is known Youlghalarra (Ya hal ara)
- Youghal.
We visited the Youlgharra Cemetery on the road between Newton and Youghal Bay. There is a memorial stone erected
by Edmond Hogan in memory of his grandson James Fogarty, deceased Dec 22, 1791 aged 17 years "Beloved in life
- lamented in death".
We were able to purchase two local history books about Nenagh: Nenagh Walkabout by Nancy Murphy, published by
Relay, 1994 and Nenagh and its Neighbourhood by E.H.Sheehan also published by Relay, Tyone, Nenagh. The first
has references to the following Fogartys
p.71: Nos 77-8, a department store was formerly the Crystal Palace; later Fogarty Brothers who introduced 'ready to
wear' men's suits to the town in 1904.
p.21: The Lions Club was chartered in 1973 by Lions International, with Dr Richard Fogarty as its first President.
p.81: Lecture Hall & Hibernian Inn - the building, chiefly in stone but with a rendered front, was designed by Joseph
Fogarty, architect, Limerick around 1889
p.54: Michael 'Brud Fogarty' built his hardware business conveniently near the creamery and now the mart; it is
continued by his son Michael and granddaughter Claire.
p.50: (Keeper View) - a more recent occupant, Michael ('Brud") Fogarty had the adjoining terrace of six houses.
p.66: No. 6-7 McCarneys used as many timber letters of the former name Wm. Fogarty as were common to the own ...
name.
p.47: Willie Fogarty has built up a video library of local events on stage and playing pitch and had work commissioned
by such as Aer Rianta, the airports governing body, Wang computers ... took voluntary retirement from a senior
executive post with Limerick County Council ... in the 1980s. (plus more)
Nenagh and its Neighbourhood references the following Fogartys:
p.7 Nos. 77 and 78 ...Fogarty Brothers were extensive drapers here for many years in the late 19th century.
p.88 (O'Connell's visit to Nenagh, 25th May, 1843). "At 2.30 the procession reached the hill of Grange. The Liberator
and Tom Steele alighted from the carriage and walked to the platform. The hill was crowded to excess the numbers
could not have been fewer than 400,000 (sic). At 3 o'clock J.P.Fogarty of Cabra Castle was called to the chair.
p.57 (ECHO OF 1798) A centerian named John Fogarty lived in Nenagh in 1872 and took pleasure in telling his
neighbours in John's Lane his personal reminiscences. He assured his listeners that he and his fellow pikemen who
composed the Killoscully contingent came frequently into dangerous closeness with Col. Waller's yeomen, and often
- from the rebel's hiding-place - saw the Colonel and his troop riding about on their farm-horses in search of the enemy.
He stated he was born on Rossaguille. He was baptised by the Rev. Fr. Cooke, P.P. of Killoscully who, he said, fled
from France in troublous times and settled down in that part of the country.
p.25 (SPOUT ROAD) Adjoining the Spout was a row of miserable cabins called Silvester Row after Silvester Fogarty,
the owner...Silvester Fogarty held 4 acres under Wills C. Bennett in Polsheshery.Ballyartella
Ballyartella lies on the fertile flood plains of the lower Nenagh River to the north-west of
Nenagh. In 1841 the owners
of Ballyartella were Robert Minnitt and James Fogarty. The "Tipperary Advocate" refers to one Colonel George T.
Bourke, Governor of Richmond, Virginia, USA, and formerly of Ballyartella, uncle to Dan Fogarty of Canada fame.
Ballyartella Manor was originally an O'Kennedy inheritance but later came into the possession of the 10th Earl of
Ormond in the 16th century. In the 17th century the Countess of Ormond held the land. Upon said land stood a ruined
castle irreparably demolished, two mills, a fishing weir, two thatched houses, six cottages and a garden plot.
In Knigh Churchyard nearby is the burial place of one of the O'Fogarty family whose tombstone bears an inscription
in Irish.William, hanged 1846
We also found reference to another Fogarty in Nenagh - William Fogarty who was hanged in Nenagh Prison aged 25.
William Fogarty was charged in 1846 with shooting at in Castletownarra (Potroe) with intent to kill Michael McDonald
Superintendent with the Imperial Slate Quarries. Found guilty and hanged on 19 June 1846. It is reported that his family
claimed the body for burial. It is also reported he was not from the Nenagh area but was passing through and working
at the slate mine.Fogarty Contacts
